Crypto Revolution in Vietnam - New Law and Asset Protection

Vietnam is a place where one in five residents owns cryptocurrency.

The Most Important Thing

On January 1, 2026, a new law came into effect. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other coins are now officially recognized as property. This gives owners one simple and clear thing - legal protection.

Previously, if scammers stole your coins, going to the police was useless. Now you have the right to protect your assets through court. It's like having your phone or bank account money stolen - now it's the same with crypto.

The most important step - starting January 20, the government began issuing licenses for the creation of official crypto exchanges. These are platforms created with the participation of major Vietnamese banks.

What this means:

· Your money is not stored with unknown people, but on exchanges that are controlled by the state.

· All transactions will follow clear rules, just like on a regular stock exchange.

· Some banks have already signed agreements with major global exchanges like OKX to apply international best practices.

Important Restriction

To prevent hype and protect newcomers, for the first six months after the first exchange opens, only two categories will be able to trade on it:

1. Foreign investors.

2. Local residents who already own cryptocurrency (they will be able to open an account based on their existing assets).

After 6 months, access will open to all residents of Vietnam.

Strict Exchange Requirements - For Security

The government does not want to repeat situations where exchanges go bankrupt and people lose all their money. Therefore, new exchanges will have very serious requirements:

· Minimum capital - nearly $400 million. This means exchange owners are not random people, but major financial institutions with solid reputations.

· Control over exchanges. At least 65% must be owned by local companies. Foreigners may own no more than 49%.

What to Keep in Mind Right Now

· You can still store crypto in a personal wallet.

· It is prohibited to sell crypto to a friend or through an exchanger. All transactions must go through official licensed exchanges. This is done to protect you from fraud.

· The exact launch date of the exchanges is not yet known, but the process has already started. Expected sometime in 2026.

Conclusion

Vietnam is taking a big step forward. Instead of banning cryptocurrencies, the country is creating clear and safe rules for them. This will attract major foreign investors, create new jobs, and - most importantly - protect its citizens.

Cryptocurrency is becoming a familiar and legal tool - like a bank account, but with far greater possibilities.
